Winter on the Kona Coast

Humpback Whales Come to the Big Island

Every winter, thousands of North Pacific humpback whales make the long journey from their feeding grounds in Alaska to the warm, shallow waters of Hawaii — and the Big Island's Kona Coast is one of their favorite destinations. The Kona Coast is sheltered from trade winds year-round, creating calm, clear viewing conditions that are among the best in Hawaii. What makes the Big Island truly unique is what you can combine with whale watching: in the morning, watch humpbacks breach and sing; in the afternoon, snorkel with giant manta rays. No other island offers this combination.

About Big Island Humpback Whales

North Pacific Humpbacks

The same population of humpback whales that visits Maui and Kauai also passes through the Kona Coast — up to 10,000 whales migrate to Hawaii each winter.

Season: December–April

Humpbacks arrive in December and depart by April. Peak activity is January through March, when calves are born and males compete for females with complex songs.

The Kona Coast is sheltered from trade winds year-round, creating exceptionally calm and clear viewing conditions — some of the best in Hawaii.

Unique Big Island Combo

Only on the Big Island can you combine whale watching with manta ray snorkeling, volcano tours, and coffee farm visits in a single day.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time for whale watching on the Big Island?

January through March is peak season, when whale density is highest and behaviors like breaching and tail-slapping are most frequent. December and April are shoulder months with good activity. Whale watching is not available May through November.

How does Big Island whale watching compare to Maui?

Maui's Au'au Channel is the most whale-dense area in Hawaii, but the Big Island's Kona Coast offers some advantages: calmer water conditions year-round, the unique ability to combine whale watching with manta ray snorkeling, and the dramatic volcanic coastline backdrop.

Can I hear the whales sing?

Yes — most tours use hydrophones (underwater microphones) to broadcast the haunting, complex songs of male humpbacks through speakers on the boat. It's one of the most memorable parts of the experience.

Are whale sightings guaranteed?

Most reputable operators offer a guarantee: if you don't see a whale, you get a free repeat trip. Sightings are extremely common during peak season — it's rare to go out and not see whales in January or February.

What should I bring?

Wear layers — it can be cool on the water even on warm days. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. A light jacket is recommended for morning departures. Motion sickness medication is recommended if you're prone to seasickness.
