The Sky Above Mauna Kea

At 13,796 feet, Mauna Kea's summit sits above 40% of Earth's atmosphere — above most of the water vapor and light pollution that blurs the night sky everywhere else. Astronomers from around the world have built 13 of their most powerful telescopes here for a reason: on a clear night, the stars don't just twinkle — they blaze. The Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon in a river of light. Planets resolve into discs. Galaxies millions of light-years away become visible to the naked eye. There is no better place on Earth to see the universe.

Know Before You Go

About Mauna Kea

The World's Best Stargazing

Mauna Kea's summit sits above 40% of Earth's atmosphere, above most water vapor and light pollution. Astronomers consistently rank it as the premier ground-based observing site on the planet — home to 13 of the world's most powerful telescopes.

Tallest Mountain on Earth

Measured from its base on the ocean floor, Mauna Kea stands 33,500 feet tall — nearly 4,500 feet taller than Everest. Its summit at 13,796 feet above sea level places you above the clouds on most nights.

Sacred to Native Hawaiians

Mauna Kea is one of the most sacred places in Hawaiian culture — the meeting point of sky father Wakea and earth mother Papa. Hawaiian chants describe the mountain as the eldest child of the islands. Guides share this cultural context throughout the tour.

Dress for the Cold

Summit temperatures regularly drop below freezing, even in summer. All tours provide warm parkas, gloves, and hats. Guests are advised to wear layers and closed-toe shoes. Altitude sickness is possible — guides monitor guests and have oxygen available.

Frequently Asked Questions

How cold does it get at the Mauna Kea summit?

Summit temperatures typically range from 25°F to 45°F (-4°C to 7°C) year-round, with wind chill making it feel colder. All tours provide insulated parkas, gloves, and hats. Wearing layers underneath is strongly recommended.

Is altitude sickness a concern?

Yes — at 13,796 feet, altitude sickness is possible, especially if you ascend too quickly. Reputable tours include an acclimatization stop at the Visitor Center (9,200 ft) before the summit drive. Guides carry supplemental oxygen. Children under 13, pregnant women, and guests with heart or respiratory conditions should do the Visitor Center tour only.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle?

The road above the Visitor Center to the summit requires a 4WD vehicle — rental cars are not permitted on this section. All summit tours provide 4WD transportation. The Visitor Center stargazing tour does not require 4WD.

What can I see through the telescopes?

Depending on the season and conditions, you may see the Moon, Saturn and its rings, Jupiter and its moons, Mars, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies millions of light-years away. Your guide selects the best targets for the night and explains what you're seeing.

What time do tours depart?

Most summit tours depart from Kailua-Kona around 1:00–2:00 PM to arrive at the Visitor Center for acclimatization before sunset. Tours return around 10:00–11:00 PM. Visitor Center tours typically depart around 3:00–4:00 PM and return by 9:00–10:00 PM.
